Construction Roundup: Affinity Sports, La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company, Viejas and More

By Dean Petersen and Steven Gorup

A new year has begun and many of our existing projects have made progress; some have even been completed as 2017 came to a close! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to over the last several months.

Affinity Sports’ Downtown Headquarters

We are thrilled to congratulate Affinity Sports on their new home. Affinity Sports specializes in Online Player Registration and Sports Management and is now part of the DICK’S Sporting Goods’ all-in-one service for youth sports leagues, DICK’S Team Sports HQ. The space is modern and creative, with polished concrete floors, open ceilings and an open concept floor plan to maximize team collaboration. The lobby and break room areas were combined to create a welcoming environment for both visitors and employees. Visitors can grab a cup of coffee and sit at one of the bar height tables or relax in the comfortable ‘living room.’ The space features bright white open ceilings and sleek glass office fronts, allowing light from the floor-to-ceiling exterior windows to pour into the space. The largely open office plan features many collaboration areas and nooks scattered throughout the floor. Hughes Marino is honored to have worked with Affinity Sports to make this space an incredible working environment for their team.

CPC Strategy

CPC Strategy, a digital marketing firm and repeat client of Hughes Marino, has recently completed an expansion of their existing headquarters in the downtown high-rise, 707 Broadway. This 9,200-square foot, full floor expansion will give CPC the much-needed space to accommodate their continued growth. The new floor plan, designed by Ware Malcomb and built by Lockrul Construction, is designed to function just like the existing space—open work areas for team collaboration accompanied by numerous conference and phone rooms for private meetings. A new feature in this office to further foster company growth that was not included in the original buildout, is two training rooms with a sliding glass door which opens and creates one large training room for high attendance meetings. Hughes Marino is very proud to have once again been selected as CPC Strategy’s partner in this project.

Bayside Fire Station #2

Exciting news for those who frequent or live in the Little Italy neighborhood of downtown! The long-awaited Fire Station No. 2 project is nearing completion and almost ready for its future occupant—San Diego Fire-Rescue. This project—which was developed by Civic San Diego, designed by Rob Quigley, built by Barnhart Reese and managed by Hughes Marino—is going to provide much-needed service to the western landscape of San Diego’s downtown train tracks. For years, fire crews responding to calls west of the tracks risked interaction and delays with the train itself. With this new station located west of the tracks, San Diego Fire-Rescue will be able to better and more efficiently serve the city’s occupants and visitors. It’s been an amazing journey watching this building come to life since day one and Hughes Marino is excited to have played a part in the future safety of San Diego.

BEFORE
AFTER

Bespoke Partners

Bespoke Partners, an executive research and leadership assessment firm, has recently completed renovations and moved in to their new Little Italy headquarters. The existing building, previously known as the Balboa Travel building, was not in the best shape. Utility infrastructure was run down, ADA access non-compliant and the architecture was overly dated. With the help of OBR Architecture, Studio H Design Group, and Back’s Construction, this cornerstone property located at the intersection of India and Laurel was completely overhauled. The before and after picture above only begins to tell the story of this amazing project. We are grateful to have been chosen as Bespoke Partners’ trusted team in leading this endeavor. Welcome back to the neighborhood!

Seacrest Village Retirement Communities

Seacrest Village, a large retirement community located in the beautiful City of Encinitas, has nearly completed the design of major renovations to their existing dining and laundry facilities. The project scope is slated to include a completely new kitchen, modernized dining room, new bar and lounge areas, along with upgraded laundry facilities to better serve their current residents. All of the renovations currently being considered are going to greatly enhance the already amazing facility. As a longtime partner of Seacrest Village, Hughes Marino is looking forward playing a part in this upcoming transformation.

Viejas Casino & Resort

After years of planning, Viejas Casino & Resort is set to open their newest addition to their high-end resort property—Willows Hotel & Spa. This stunning new tower, which has taken its shape over the last few months, is turning out to be absolutely gorgeous. Designed to compete with the Southwest’s most high-end resorts, this 159-room, all suite hotel is outfitted with the best of everything. With a new luxury spa, adult-only pool and added restaurants, hotel guests will have their choice of a wide variety of amenities to enhance their stay. Opening to the public on February 1st, Hughes Marino appreciates the opportunity to represent Viejas in such a beautiful project.

La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company

We are excited to announce the completion of the expansion project for La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company. The new headquarters is complete with 55,000 square feet of creative office space and 25,000 square feet of very heavy chemistry lab space built to BSL-II and cGMP standards. The lab space houses over 20 bio-safety cabinets, numerous HPLC units and three cold rooms. The creative office space includes a multi-purpose room that doubles as a break room. Dozens of conference rooms and privacy rooms separate the open office concept to provide privacy between divisions. Congratulations to the La Jolla Pharmaceutical team on your new space!

And that’s a wrap! Tune in again next time for more exciting progress updates and some new up-and-coming projects in our next roundup!
