Our December 2018 HM Mini Goal–Perform Another Random Act of Kindness

By John Jarvis

Supportive Hughes Marino Mini Goalers,

Our November Mini Goal was to support the arts, and I started the month thinking of all the cool museums I could visit, or maybe I would go to a local play, or the symphony or a concert. I finally decided on seeing Jake Shimabukuru play his Ukulele at the Belly Up Tavern. What’s that, you don’t know Jake Shimabukuru? I suggest you google him playing While My Guitar Weeps in Central Park, mind-blowing really. Yes, there were myriad directions one could take this Mini Goal, and I was fascinated to see where you all would take it.

Westgroup Designs acknowledged a British artist by the name of Victor Pasmore on their Instagram account as they were drawn and inspired by his abstract piece! Elizabeth Carvalho spent the day at Balboa Park with her boyfriend and enjoyed all the museums had to offer.

But for my part, before I could get to the Belly Up, I came across a remarkable local artist in a booth at the Little Italy Farmers Market in San Diego. One of his pieces caught my eye, a kid jumping high off a swing, and as I perused his other works on display, they really struck a nerve, taking me straight back to my childhood through the eyes of my eight-year-old self.  I’m not sure what this says about me, but here are a few of his pieces, and a selfie in my favorite new t-shirt.

His name is David B. Cuzick and his studio, Circles and Squares, is located in North Park. Feel free to stop by and check out his work.

Yeah, the experience of art is deeply personal. We all get to choose for ourselves what resonates, what we appreciate and what we support. Which is why I still went to the concert at the Belly Up. And yes, it was amazing.

And speaking of amazing, you all are amazing, and you have been so resolute in carrying out our Mini Goals each month and practicing being impeccable with our words. If you can believe it, our December Mini Goal is our very last Mini Goal and our final opportunity to do what we said we would do. So we decided to make it easy and fun, going back to the wildcard—well, our swan song Mini Goal is to:

Perform another random act of kindness.

Simple stuff. Be nice. Be kind. Share the love. Then tell us what you did.

We know you will, because you said you would. We can’t wait to hear.

This is how we grow.
