At Work for the Holidays: A Guide to Holiday Décor in the Office

By Star Hughes-Gorup

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is just around the corner! Sometimes it can be hard to get into the festive spirit during what many working professionals find to be their busiest time of year. Instead of spending your days by the fireplace admiring your beautiful decor, you’re facing a computer and maybe a holiday themed screensaver if you’re lucky! I like to be reminded of just how special this time of year is, even when I’m at work, and fortunately my employer agrees! Here is every company’s guide to holiday décor in the workplace:

1. Keep it tasteful.

It’s easy to get carried away with a little bit of holiday spirit. But it’s important to keep holiday décor in the office classy, simple, and accepting of all faiths. Stay away from religious decorations like crosses, nativity sets, menorahs and/or Star of David décor. The last thing you want is to offend your team members while trying to inspire cheer! Instead, stick to a winter theme that appeals to all of your employees, as well as the clients, customers and vendors who visit your office. I love the “winter wonderland” theme of snowflake décor, glitter, and greenery – and it works well with all types of office spaces.

2. Select and stick to one or two colors – preferably not red or green.

Red and green are both bold, attention-grabbing colors – there is a reason they are used in traffic signals! While they are fun and festive, they aren’t always bold in an aesthetically appealing way for an office. Winter shades of whites, silvers, or golds are less distracting and provide a more sophisticated look than bright reds and greens (particularly in an office that already uses bold colors in its décor scheme).

3. Bring the outdoors in for the holidays.

Get festive with holiday flower arrangements and greenery. Beautiful arrangements can be made more spectacular by placing them in a mercury glass vase for a bit of glitter and glam! Likewise, fir or evergreen wreaths and garlands adorned with ribbons or bows in your selected holiday colors can create an elegant look for your office.

When it comes to holiday decorating in your work place, it’s safe to say that less is often more. Now enjoy – and have a wonderful holiday season!
