Spring is officially here, the sun is beginning to peek through the clouds and buildings are popping up everywhere—‘tis the season for construction! Here’s the latest and greatest from our program, project and construction management team.
The Berggruen Institute Moves Headquarters to the Iconic Bradbury Building
The Berggruen Institute, a think tank dedicated to fostering and developing foundational ideas to shape political, economic and social institutions, sought to have a presence in Downtown Los Angeles and chose the iconic Bradbury Building as their new home. The Bradbury is the oldest commercial building in the center of the city and was heavily featured in the original Ridley Scott film, Blade Runner.
Our team has been working alongside Gensler and JDM Contractors in managing the design and construction of the new headquarters which was recently completed in March. The space features a combination of creative modern elements mixed with existing historical features of The Bradbury, striking the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary design. The new headquarters includes an open ceiling concept, glass office fronts, a variety of offices and conference rooms, a library, an employee lounge and a wellness room. More photos to come on our next update on this incredible project!
PayLease Takes Over 9330 Scranton
A new name will now fly across the top of 9330 Scranton, formerly known as the “Chicken of the Sea” building. PayLease, a leading service provider of property management tools and also a full service client of Hughes Marino, is expanding their existing 4th floor office into a large portion of the 5th floor. With this added square footage, PayLease retains rights to building top signage on the south side of 9330 Scranton facing northbound commuters which for years had been occupied by Chicken of the Sea. In addition to the new signage, PayLease is busy constructing a beautiful new office space for employees. Designed by Gensler and built by Burger Construction, this new expansion space is set to be operational just in time for summer.
American Council on Exercise’s New Campus
We are excited to announce that American Council on Exercise, a national organization with global reach that works to increase physical activity, is moving into their newly remodeled home. Their new campus consists of two combined properties—a 20,000 square foot, two-story building that they had purchased mid-2017 and their existing building just next door. The overall remodel started last November and was recently completed this March. The remodel included ground floor public space with combinable multipurpose rooms for training and events, and corporate offices on the second floor. The parking lot also underwent a major rework to connect the two lots, create a walkway between the buildings and includes an outdoor amenity space for employees. It has been a great experience working with the teams from Back’s Construction and Ware Malcomb on this exciting campus remodel—congratulations to all on this successful project together!
Steve Yeng Expands in San Diego’s Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach local Steve Yeng, the owner of OB Noodle House, Bar 1502 and OB Donuts is expanding his footprint onto Newport Avenue. Steve recently purchased the property formerly known as Gallagher’s and has demolished most of the building to make way for a brand new restaurant and music venue called The Holding Company. The project team is nearly complete with design and is gearing up to start constructing what will eventually be a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. Currently scheduled to be complete by 2018, Hughes Marino is proud to be a selected partner in this effort.
Center for Sustainable Energy Kicks Off Relocation
The Center for Sustainable Energy, a mission-driven nonprofit organization that develops custom solutions to provide clean energy program design and management, and technical advisory services, is moving their headquarters to a 29,000+ square foot, two-story building. The project will include public space and an Innovation Center for large gatherings and sustainable education on the ground floor. True to their mission of advocating sustainable power and clean energy, their new headquarters will have an open structured floor plan and other features that will allow as much natural lighting as possible. The project kicked off with a dynamic team including Carrier Johnson + Culture, Rizza Engineering, DEC Engineering and Burger Construction. Stay tuned for more updates as our project team continues to make headway on CSE’s relocation!
And that’s it, folks! We have more exciting updates coming up so stay tuned for our next Construction Round Up this summer!
