Title: Vice President
Age: 31
Favorite beach for his family in OC: Emerald Bay
Career accomplishments to date: Holding an MBA and a J.D., JP Roach is a former business litigator who has served as both a broker and assistant in-house counsel for Hughes Marino. As a broker, he has helped countless tenants lease and purchase office space throughout Orange and San Diego Counties. JP has worked with clients in a wide variety of industries, including biotechnology, life science, software, healthcare, and professional services.
First-time father tip: As a new father, JP’s greatest joy is seeing his 11-month-old daughter Ellery smile and laugh. On evenings when JP has to work late with clients, or as part of his involvement in the Orange County Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth, he FaceTimes with Ellery and his wife Courtney so he doesn’t miss seeing Ellery before she goes down for bed.
5:15 am: JP is literally pounding the pavement, before the sun even comes up. Whether he’s running his typical 5 miles, swimming laps, or squeezing in a dawn patrol surf session, JP relishes exercise, even when it’s still dark out. “I love working out, and I’m always up early, so while my wife, daughter and dogs are still sleeping, I get my exercise in. It’s a great way to do some thinking before the day starts,” he says.
6:30 am: An hour or so later, JP, Ellery and Courtney eat breakfast together before JP heads off to the office. JP’s breakfast typically consists of a healthy fruit or vegetable smoothie, and he usually sneaks in a few sips for Ellery. “I can’t help but smile when I think about Ellery. She is just this little tiny human that I adore more than anything. From the time she was just a few weeks old, she’s had this happy, smiling personality,” he says.
7:45 am: JP is in the office preparing for a day that may consist of touring space with clients, attending architecture and space-planning meetings, strategizing with his clients’ executive teams, or meeting with the Hughes Marino Operations team. Before noon, he’s typically drafted proposals, redlined counter proposals, and briefed multiple clients.
10:30 am: JP’s face lights up when his wife and fellow attorney Courtney sends him a photo or video of Ellery. “Courtney knows how hard it is for me to be away from Ellery, so she’s great about sending me photos of what they are doing during the day. I look forward to it every day.”
12:00 pm: JP typically takes a working lunch. “I’ll meet a client for lunch, or I’ll use lunch for networking,” he says.
1:00 pm-6:00 pm: JP spends many afternoons outside the office at meetings or on tours with clients. When he is in the office, he focuses on client engagement work, negotiating deal points, preparing presentations, providing updates to existing clients, and responding to calls and emails.
6:30 pm: JP makes it a point to be home in time to help with Ellery’s bath and bedtime routine, which often includes an impromptu jam session. “I play the guitar, but I still can’t play guitar and sing well at the same time. Fortunately, Ellery doesn’t mind that I do both terribly,” he laughs. “She loves it!”
7:00 pm: JP and the dogs, Chief and Cooper, take an evening stroll.
7:30 pm: With a home office adjacent to the kitchen, JP responds to emails and recaps his day with Courtney while she makes dinner.
8:30 pm: “We’ll watch a show or two after dinner. I’m ashamed to admit it, but we do love The Bachelor,” JP laughs. “Then we’ll read for a while before bed, usually a business book or catching up on the news.”
Although the weekdays are generally jam-packed for the Roach family, when it comes to weekends and time off, JP says the family is all about the beach. “Courtney and I were both born and raised in Southern California. We are always at the beach with Ellery and the dogs, surfing, stand-up paddling, and enjoying family time.”
