Ocean Discovery Institute Living Lab rendering

Description

The Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI) first broke ground on its Living Lab educational facility. Once complete, the Living Lab will provide after school science education to underserved students from nearby schools. Designed by Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA, the revolutionary facility will incorporate green technology to create a zero-net energy building that will include solar power and gray water systems. Although ODI’s main focus is underwater marine life, the new facility’s encompassing landscaping is designed to unite the building elements with the location’s natural surroundings.

Added Value

Hughes Marino helped the Ocean Discovery Institute raise funds, negotiate and plan for their new facility for over four years. During the initial due diligence period, Hughes Marino helped ODI find the land and properly plan for its desired growth. The Living Lab is situated within the crevice of a canyon. Throughout the design process, Hughes Marino’s project management team helped to ensure the design met the desired budget, and subsequently ensured the structural integrity and scheduling of construction. Hughes Marino also collaborated with school district project managers to ensure timely delivery and thorough financial monitoring during the construction phase.

Service Provided

Hughes Marino provided project and construction management services which included weekly site visits, in-depth constructability reviews, documentation control and budget review.
