Hughes Marino Comes Together for Challenged Athletes Foundation

Hughes Marino team members had a blast at San Diego’s Challenged Athletes Foundation Triathlon on October 19, 2014.

Two weekends ago, Hughes Marino had the tremendous honor of supporting and participating in a truly special event benefiting the Challenged Athletes Foundation by participating in their San Diego Triathlon Challenge. The Challenged Athletes Foundation recognizes the athletic greatness inherent in all people with physical challenges and supports their athletic endeavors by providing unparalleled opportunities that lead to success in sports — and in life. The entire HM team was incredibly excited about supporting this inspiring organization again this year.

With a whopping 18 Hughes Marino team members participating in various sporting challenges, many other HM team members also showed support by volunteering at the finish line where they handed out snacks and water to all of the athletes.

For the triathlon itself, 12 Hughes Marino team members were divided into four relay teams, with three members on each. We decided to have our own internal competition amongst our own teams, and I’m proud to report that The Silverbacks (John Jarvis, Ed Muna and Craig Knox) beat out the much younger Team Boosh (Shane Poppen, Travis Carter and Brendan Foote) by a whopping eight seconds to come in first among the HM teams!

We had another five Hughes Marino athletes participate in the event’s “Tour de Cove” stationary cycling marathon, which lasted four and a half hours and proved to be a great deal of fun. We tip our hats to Scott Iverson, Kelly Muna, Hope Fox, Heather Fox, and Carlie Nagel for spinning their support!

Ed and Michael Muna running the CAF Triathlon
Father and son duo, Ed and Michael Muna were all smiles on their way to the finish line in La Jolla.

Multiple generations of HM team members also came out to compete, with three members – representing two generations of the Muna family – all taking part. We loved seeing Ed, Kelly, and their son, HM intern Michael, sweating together in this fun fundraiser.

Hughes Marino CM Vice President Dave Bates completes CAF Triathlon
We are all so inspired by CM Vice President Dave Bates, who completed his first triathlon!

However, a special shout out is warranted for our very own Dave Bates, vice president of Construction Management. Dave opted to complete the entire triathlon on his own, and he did so with great success (and no injuries)! Dave, who had never completed a triathlon before registering for the challenging CAF tri, started training in June for the event, and our entire team was incredibly proud to watch him complete this milestone. All told, Dave swam a full mile in the ocean, rode a bike for 44 miles, and finished it off with a 10-mile run and a very satisfied smile crossing the finish line.

I know that I speak for everyone at Hughes Marino when I say that participating in the Challenged Athletes Foundation San Diego Triathlon Challenge was one of the highlights of our year. We came together as a team to support one another, while also supporting an incredibly worthwhile cause. And to boot, we had a tremendous amount of fun doing it.

We hope to see you at next year’s challenge! By the way, if you’d like to donate to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, you can still do so here.
