Our June 2017 HM Mini Goal

By John Jarvis

Arboreal Hughes Marino Mini Goalers!

Take a deep breath and enjoy all of that wonderful oxygen we are generating with our fresh planting in May! Over in Texas, Brenna’s parents transplanted trees that they grew from acorns. Our friends Mary-Jo planted kumquat trees in her backyard and Angela repotted her orchids. Briana and Maureen accomplished their goal together by potting basil seeds and succulents. Abraham’s daughter, Amelia, helped plant some beautiful flowers at their home. The Jarvis family planted a new avocado tree in our backyard, and I can’t wait to enjoy the fruits of our labor!

Planting a tree that will grow for years is a perfect metaphor for what we do here at Hughes Marino, where we talk a lot about growth, and about cultivating a curious mind. One of the ways we practice and reinforce curiosity and growth is through writing. That’s a hint, because the June Mini Goal is to:

Write an article!

I think I just heard a collective gasp. I totally understand. Not everyone loves to write. For some of us it might feel like high school again, with a looming essay assignment. Don’t worry, be happy. This isn’t high school. And writing can be easy, fun and important.

Here is how we talk about it at Hughes Marino. We are expected to be thought leaders in our field. We are stronger as a team if everyone on the team writes well and writes often. We all need to practice writing, and through practice we improve. Not everything we write needs to be published, and everyone needs to try.

What do you want to say? And how do you want to say it? You see, that’s the hard part. Walk with that for a few days, let it percolate in your brain. Then once you have your thinking straight, the writing is easy! (It’s the thinking that’s hard.)

It will be cool to see some articles come out of this, both on our blog from Hughes Marino team members and also from our clients and friends! What will you write? Where will you publish and/or post your article? You can always send them back to minigoals@hughesmarino.com and we can try to include some sampling in an upcoming newsletter?! That would be cool.

So get right to it. It is time to write! You only have thirty days left!

This is how we grow.
