Spaces We Love: Funny or Die’s Fabulous and FUN Headquarters

It’s no surprise that a company co-founded by some of Hollywood’s brightest (and funniest) creative minds has one of its most fun and creative office spaces too! Described by Fast Company as “funhouse chic,” Funny or Die’s West Hollywood office is a start-up’s dream office.

Only the brightest of colors adorn the walls of the HQ. A bright, bubblegum blue conference room. An even brighter banana peel yellow kitchen. Pops of color are an easy way to liven up your office at a minimal cost. These saturated hues make the space fun and energetic, and eliminate the need for wall décor (a savings that most start-ups will appreciate!).

Metal ducting adds dimension to the concrete ceilings and is the ultimate feature of any creative office space today. The good news for companies looking to achieve a similar look? More and more landlords are willing to expose ceilings in today’s office market – and about half of all “ready now” speculative suites are built with them already completed!

Polished concrete floors are another quintessential creative space must-have, and they too can be created in most buildings built in the last century. Even if a space has shag carpet when you first see it, it’s always possible to rip out the carpet, grind down the glue underneath, and polish the concrete into the kind of beautiful, shiny masterpiece that creative companies clamor for today.

Glass breakout rooms are a great way to connect enclosed rooms with the rest of the office. Fortunately for tenants today, glass is now considered a “building standard” by most institutional landlords, and is incorporated into almost all conference room designs. Funny or Die added AstroTurf to the floor of one of their breakout rooms – a great alternative to carpet that is certainly in line with their theme of bright colors!

Funny or Die was intentional with their space plan by strategically placing their kitchen in the center of the office. It allows (and forces) employees to connect with one another over a cup of coffee (or two…or three) throughout the day. The kitchen, when placed centrally, becomes a place of collaboration and communication, rather than just a place to prepare your lunch.

One of the best parts about Funny or Die’s Los Angeles headquarters is that its budget-friendly style is achievable for most start-ups looking to create a similar vibe! Thank you, Funny or Die, for not only creating an amazing place for your own team to work, but for inspiring other companies to do the same. And of course, thanks for the hilarious videos too!
