Nik Bandak is vice president at Hughes Marino. Nik earned a degree in financial services from Saint Mary’s College of California where he graduated with honors.
Since joining Hughes Marino in 2011, Nik has completed over 2,000,000 SF of projects ranging in size, industry and complexity. His resume of completed projects include multifamily and transitional housing facilities, ground up medical office buildings, high-end law firm projects, electronics manufacturing, biotechnology and life science projects. Nik has extensive experience working with numerous municipalities, the Department of State Architects, and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). He has also managed the design and construction of numerous laboratory facilities that meet National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements.
Within the biotechnology and life science sector, Nik worked on Receptos’ lab and office space (40,000 SF, phase one and 25,000 SF, phase two); the La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company (80,000 SF GMP chemistry lab and creative office space); the BioLegend Master Plan and Phase 1 of the BioLegend Campus Project (40,000 SF biotech lab space equipped with a vivarium and BSL-II lab space). In the technology and manufacturing industries, projects include Nordson Asymtek (93,000 SF office, lab, and manufacturing warehouse facility); Airgain (15,000 SF office, electronics lab and test chamber facility); ecoATM (50,000 SF office and processing facility); and CoStar Group (10,000 SF office space).
A few of his corporate office projects include Latham & Watkins LLP (75,000 SF headquarters); California Bank & Trust (20,000 SF banking and office space); JAMS Los Angeles (33,000 SF); MedImpact (22,000 SF office space); and ESET (60,000 SF North American headquarters, completed in six phases).
For ground up and renovation projects, Nik worked on Connections Housing (12-story, 120,000 SF renovation of the historical World Trade Center building in Downtown San Diego); Helix Charter High School Performing Arts Complex (34,000 SF ground up construction); Family Health Centers of San Diego (three-story, 20,000 SF medical office building with surrounding parking lot and bio-retention basin); and Albert Einstein Academy Charter Middle School (38,000 SF school with adjoining 32,000 SF parking lot).
As a key member of the Hughes Marino team, Nik is a valuable partner to companies as they organize their goals for growth and assess their needs in navigating the intricate entitlements process. Throughout the past year he has helped companies like the La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company, Alvarado Parkway Institute, Nordson Corporation, the University Christian Church, and BioLegend plan strategic expansions. Currently, Nik is managing the planning and design of the BioLegend Headquarters Campus which recently completed Phase 1 (40,000 SF biotech lab space equipped with a vivarium and BSL-II lab space) and is under construction on the Phase Two of the Campus Master Plan ($100 million endeavor which includes a seven-story, 700-stall parking garage, 200,000 SF of building construction, order fulfillment processing facility and 250,000 SF of site improvements).
Nik and his wife, Kelly, assist high school students in preparing and submitting college applications to universities across the world. Nik is a hobby carpenter and triathlete, and enjoys going to the beach, exercising, writing, and traveling with their identical twin boys.
