On The Radar: What’s on the Horizon for Makers Quarter

Makers Quarter calls itself “a melting pot where creative culture brings to life a collaborative community…”

At the eastern edge of downtown, bordering San Diego City College, Makers Quarter is already becoming a new hotspot for young, urban trendsetters. But what’s happening in this historic neighborhood now is just a preview of what is sure to come.

Here’s what locals are already enjoying in Makers Quarter:

SILO

SILO has been branded “The Spot, the Space, the Venue.” Located at 753 15th Street, SILO was nothing more than a vacant lot until recently. Now it’s emerged as a meeting place for all things cool. SILO boasts movie nights, craft beer tastings, film festival events and even family-friendly activities like pumpkin patches in the fall. SMARTS FARM

Urban farming and gardening have come to San Diego at Smarts Farm. Created by the nonprofit Humane Smarts, the corner of F Street and 15th has come to life with fresh flowers and vegetables in this community garden. According to their website, “Smart Farm’s Mission is to support healthy and productive lifestyles for the community while teaching, enhancing, and connecting residents and youth to fresh produce and education about urban gardening. Programs will include multiple workshop venues, hands-on gardening opportunities for San Diego’s youth, as well as community garden plots for nearby residents.”

So what’s next for Makers Quarter? Here’s what’s coming down the road:

Most commercial leases in existing Makers Quarter buildings are maxed out at one year. That’s because developers are busy planning for a brand new “live/work/play neighborhood that is more than just a new place,” according to their mission statement. “This is a melting pot where creative culture brings to life a collaborative community. It’s a place that embraces the past while ushering in the future.”

So what does that mean? Well, it means that this area of San Diego is one to watch. The revitalization of Makers Quarter is going to be exciting, as developers turn what is currently an underutilized area of downtown into a thriving hub, while breaking ground on new projects and attracting those who are seeking an all-inclusive neighborhood in which to live, work and play. By that token, I predict we’ll see an influx of tech and creative companies to this particular area. There are no definitive dates on when we’ll start to see movement, but it is reasonable to think that within the next five to ten years, this entire area will have undergone a complete renaissance.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on this up and coming neighborhood, and other emerging trends and developments in downtown’s real estate scene as they crop up.
