A Look Inside Hughes Marino’s West Los Angeles Office

Commercial real estate firm Hughes Marino has recently moved into a new Los Angeles office designed to provide a homelike atmosphere for staff.

Hughes Marino COO Shay Hughes had a singular goal in mind when designing her company’s new Los Angeles office: To create a home-like atmosphere to promote Hughes Marino’s tight-knit culture. This concept has already proven successful in the commercial real estate brokerage’s San Diego headquarters and Orange County office.


“Our team members spend a lot of time at work, so the office becomes a home away from home,” says Shay. “We created a cheerful and inviting environment that promotes a culture where people treat each other like family.”


The new office, located at Westwood Gateway where the 405 meets Santa Monica Boulevard, enjoys panoramic city views that extend from Rancho Palos Verdes to the Pacific Ocean. Although it’s located on the tenth floor of a high-rise, the office incorporates home-like elements such as distressed, wide plank wood floors, marble kitchen counters, framed photos of team members’ families on the walls, and a fun mix of eclectic furniture.


Unlike most break rooms that are tucked away, a gourmet kitchen and two tables take center stage — one bar height table perfect for pulling up with a cup of coffee, and one that doubles as a lunch table or additional touch point to host a meeting. “We imagined a place where the team can sit and gather for impromptu meetings,” noted Shay. Gourmet coffee machines, fresh flowers and groceries delivered weekly make this seem more like a kitchen in a friend’s home. Bowls of candy and fresh fruit satisfy whatever mid-afternoon cravings anyone may have.


One of the first things visitors will notice about the office is the vibrant collection of art. “We selected the art first, then designed the space to showcase it,” explains Shay. “The blues and pinks of the décor are inspired by the art and reflect the proximity to the sparkling Pacific Ocean and creative energy of Los Angeles.”


The Los Angeles office features works by artists also featured in Hughes Marino’s other offices. Several pieces of custom furniture by Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic in Santa Monica were commissioned including a duplicate of a blue velvet couch in Hughes Marino’s Orange County office. A light blue ottoman tucked under a window is the perfect place for a five-minute power nap.


There’s a gym onsite for a quick lunchtime workout, an outdoor koi pond, and a refreshing outdoor seating area where team members can soak up some sunshine.

“It’s all about looking at the big picture and making sure we have the happiest team members possible,” says Shay. “We hope to show our clients that by rethinking their workspaces, they can also reimagine their culture.”
