Our June 2018 HM Mini Goal – Perform a Random Act of Kindness

By John Jarvis

Munificent Hughes Marino Mini Goalers,

Did you know that May was National Older Americans Month? I didn’t! How perfect that we chose this month to show some love to seniors!

For my part, I chose to provide a modest financial contribution to a remarkable organization, San Diego Oasis. Haven’t heard of them? Let me tell you.

Oasis was founded in 1982 in partnership with May Department Stores (now Macy’s) donating space in their department stores across the country for Oasis to run their fantastic programs for seniors. The mission of Oasis is to promote successful aging through a three-fold approach of lifelong learning, healthy living and community service.

The organization is thriving in San Diego with 43,000 members in spite of losing their free space last year at the Mission Valley Macy’s which was closed. I helped them find a new home—here is a cool, short video showing their great new digs at Grossmont Center.

Every time I slow down for a moment, look up from my busy work day and notice the amazing work of all the big-hearted volunteers in our midst, I am truly humbled. I am grateful to have organizations like Oasis in our community.

And other people did some really cool things with seniors as well. Heather Fox and Hope Fox volunteered at their local Veterans Home for Founders Day and spent time with our local heroes. On a weekly basis, Maureen Waris is a caregiver to seniors and provides compassionate care and assistance to those in need, and Briana Waris delivered roses to her family friend to brighten her day!

As we approach the mid-year mark, let’s recap—we started the year with a random act of kindness, then showed some love to first responders, veterans, kids and older adults. What do you want to do next? Well, it is up to you, because the June Mini Goal is:

Wildcard-You choose! Perform another random act of kindness!

As a reminder, during this year of giving generously to others, our intention is to highlight the great things that ordinary people do every day, the heroes among us.

I can’t wait to hear the stories of the everyday heroes that we all choose to honor and support.

Don’t forget to send photos! Be sure to tag your photos with #hmminigoals. We can’t wait to see what you do to make the world a brighter place.

Thanks for playing along!
