Hughes Marino Adds Top Local CBRE Talent to New Seattle Office

By Briana Waris

Seattle, WA – Hughes Marino, the award-winning commercial real estate company that exclusively represents corporate tenants in their leasing and purchasing of office space, will open its newest office in Seattle on July 5 staffed by top CBRE brokers, Owen Rice, Executive Vice President, and Gavin Curtis, Vice President, who will hit the ground running by taking advantage of combined decades of local experience.

“We are excited to have found such perfect team members to open an office in the fastest-growing big city in the country,” says Jason Hughes, Chairman, CEO and Owner of Hughes Marino. “Owen and Gavin have deep relationships and understand the needs of businesses in the region. Backed by the values and resources of our company, we are confident they will build on their own success in the market.” Hughes also said that more brokerage additions were on the way.

Hughes Marino is a privately-held brokerage owned and run by husband-and-wife team Jason and Shay Hughes. “We’re proud of the family-style culture we’ve cultivated at all our offices,” says Shay, President, COO and Owner. “I know Owen and Gavin will fit right into that atmosphere and share it with our teammates, clients and the Seattle community.” Hughes Marino is known for having a substantial depth of Operational Team members, including in-house attorneys, lease audit specialists, and project managers–with a ratio of operational team members to brokers of 10-15 times more than that of their competitors.

Rice, a graduate of the University of Washington, was named the state’s office broker of the year at just 36 years old. Other accolades include being CBRE’s top ranked leasing broker statewide for two of the last three years and top ten since 2011, as well as being nominated as a 40 Under 40 business leader in the Puget Sound Business Journal. Owen has been responsible for managing both domestic and international real estate portfolios in aggregate of 3 million plus square feet, representing Fortune 500 companies and the most sophisticated life science and biotech tenants in the region.

Curtis was raised in Seattle and also came up within the local commercial real estate world, where he followed in the footsteps of his father, Ed Curtis (who last year sold his firm, Washington Partners to publicly-traded commercial real estate company, JLL). Gavin and Rice have been partners for years, leading CBRE’s Seattle tenant advisory team, and know all about the competitive nature of helping companies use office space solutions to recruit and retain the best talent.

The Seattle office will occupy 7,300 square feet on the 25th floor of the stunning downtown Russell Investments Center. With panoramic views of Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountain range, CenturyLink field and Seattle’s bustling downtown, their latest office is strategically situated at the center of the city’s market, retail, financial and cultural districts. Known for their stunningly designed and outfitted award-winning workspaces, this is the seventh office opened by Hughes Marino and will be the first outside of California.

Hughes Marino will continue to look for opportunities to grow in response to client demand. The vertically integrated commercial real estate firm specializes in tenant representation—not landlords—and also offers program, project and construction management, lease administration and lease audit services. In addition to the Seattle office, Hughes Marino has expanded from its home base in San Diego to Los Angeles, Orange County, Inland Empire, Silicon Valley and San Francisco. The firm has represented companies occupying tens of millions of square feet across the nation.

“We will keep moving forward with growth plans when we find amazing teammates like Owen and Gavin,” says Jason Hughes. “We’ll continue to bring on the best professionals in target markets and ensure that we are always raising the bar of service in our industry.”

In addition to being named a best place to work in the Business Journals in every region where they operate, Hughes Marino has earned national recognition by Entrepreneur as the #3 medium company in the nation on their Top Company Cultures List in 2017, and was ranked the #7 company on Fortune’s 2016 list of the country’s best workplaces.

Leading a national movement for tenant’s rights, Jason Hughes pioneered the passage of California SB 1171 in 2015, a law which requires commercial real estate brokers to provide written disclosure of dual-agency status to their clients. He also recently launched the Association for Commercial Tenants (ACT), a national nonprofit organization to serve as a united voice for the rights of tenants, and to raise awareness about the inherent conflict of interest created by dual-agency brokerage representation.
