Viejas

Viejas Casino & Resort is full steam ahead with the addition of some amazing new products to the already award-winning property located in Alpine with the help of Hughes Marino’s project management team. Included within the design is a major casino remodel and expansion, multiple high-end restaurant venues, and a showpiece new 159-suite hotel which will rival Southern California’s most premier destinations. Just last month, one of the project’s first major milestones was achieved. The Viejas executive team held the grand opening of their newly expanded Bus Center located on the north side of the casino, which was designed to further enhance and streamline access to the property for surrounding residents. Look for more exciting updates on the horizon from the Viejas team who is looking to take their property to the premiere level of hospitality and entertainment.

Bayside Fire Station #2

Progress is being made on the Bayside Fire Station, which you can see is now out of the ground and really taking shape since it’s groundbreaking ceremony back in March 2016. The project was featured in the recent Open House San Diego event coordinated by the San Diego Architectural Foundation. Gretchen Sorenson of Civic San Diego and Dave Bates conducted presentations to the open house visitors on the project’s history and goals with support from Shawn Fisher and Shane Liberty of Barnhart-Reese Construction. The project is on schedule to be completed later this year. Keep an eye out for more updates!

Ocean Discovery Institute

Big things are happening in City Heights as the Ocean Discovery Institute recently celebrated the topping off of their new Living Lab Project! Key members of the project team met in early December to document their names in history (literally) by signing the beam that was hoisted into place. It was truly an emotional event for the entire team that’s worked tirelessly throughout the past eight years. The Hughes Marino team is so incredibly excited to be part of this journey and to complete this memorable project in 2017.

Competitor Group

Competitor Group, Inc., one of the nation’s leading media and event entertainment companies, who also owns and operates the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and publishes the Competitor Magazine you can pick up at your local Jamba Juice, recently relocated its headquarters to The Verge in Sorrento Mesa. This campus is also home to tech giant Google’s San Diego office. The space, designed by ID Studios and constructed by Burger Construction, features a largely open plan concept with inboard offices offering every employee a view of the surrounding amenity-filled campus and canyon beyond. Conference rooms and phone rooms offer spaces for both collaboration and privacy. The space also features a large breakroom and a photo/video studio.

La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company

San Diego is ripe with impressive biotech and life science companies. Hughes Marino is honored and excited to be partnered with the La Jolla Pharmaceutical team on their expansion project. Located in the heart of UTC, the interior of the new headquarters includes a flexible all-hands space, creative office space and multiple meeting rooms that will help to exemplify La Jolla Pharmaceutical’s company culture. Additionally, the state-of-the-art laboratory space has been strategically laid out to maximize flexibility and efficiency. McFarlane Architects, Miller Design and Rudolph & Sletten are partnered on the project that is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2017.

Alvarado Parkway Institute

Congratulations to the Alvarado Parkway Institute for starting construction on their new Rehabilitation Center in La Mesa! Hughes Marino’s project management team is working alongside Alvarado Parkway Institute’s managers to design a safe and meaningful facility that allows their nurses to treat those in need. The new facility includes a number of in-patient rooms, a central living room-style space and outdoor amenity space. Ware Malcomb and Back’s Construction have teamed up with Alvarado Parkway Institute and Hughes Marino to complete the project by the end of June 2017.

Mapp

To start off the year, Hughes Marino completed a successful relocation of Mapp, a worldwide internet marketing company, from Mission Valley to Sorrento Mesa. Formerly known as BlueHornet, Mapp underwent a complete transformation from their previous identity. With an updated name, branding, and awesome new digs, Mapp has completely transformed the culture in a game-changing way. The Hughes Marino team prides itself on the ability to align with companies who share the same belief on the importance of positive culture within the workplace. To be selected as Mapp’s trusted partner in this project has been a great honor. We are very excited to see the future impacts of this project for a truly fantastic client.

New Interpretation to Title-24

If you recently completed a construction project, you have probably noticed the ‘controlled’ outlets. There is now an interpretation based on the 2016 California Energy Commission Compliance Manual that these types of outlets are not required if your project does not involve installing or replacing the entirety of the electrical power distribution system. If you are currently in design for a Tenant Improvement project, please be sure to consult your Electrical Engineer to see if this change applies to your project.

2017 Calibre Design Award Nominations

Our team is very grateful and proud to be a part of two amazing projects that were recently nominated for a 2017 Calibre Design Award. The awards, sponsored by the Southern California Chapter of the IIDA, recognize projects that display great teamwork and stunning design.
